My New Favorite Music to Write To

Last week on Murderati, Allison Brennan blogged about music people like to write to. Well, I've discovered a new band that fits the bill for me perfectly:

Mogwai.

Great big, shimmering, trancy, guitar-based instrumentals. Something in this music just tickles the creative center of my brain while not being so distracting that I can't concentrate on the material.

Check it out.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the tip. If you've not heard them you may want to check out Maserati (I suggest 12/16 to start). http://www.myspace.com/maseratirocks

You should seriously check out Sigur Rios too if you're into Mogwai. Same vibe, same wall of sound. I saw Mogwai at the Coachella music festival a few years back and they were playing the same time as the Cure, who were on the main stage. The Cure actually stop playing to ask Mogwai to turn it down. It was hilarious

Oooh. Thanks for this. I've been getting tired of Massive Attack all the time, though I've been listening to the soundtrack to Run Lola Run a lot. Not nearly as soothing.

I wrote a wonderfully consistent insult aimed at Blackmoore. But, JD saved me from myself by not publishing it. Or maybe JD just never got around to it.

I can't listen to anything with lyrics and write. The words and rhythms fight it out and I lose.

But the repetition of Mogwai doesn't suit me either.

So I put on piano players like Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson. That's what works for me. I know. I'm old.

Gerard: I figured you were joking, but that's not how it looked in print.

Yeah, that's a problem I often make. Thanks for not posting it, JD.

For Blackmoore's benefit, I was simply repeating a comment I made on your blog regarding your recent introspection.

I just now read Terrenoire's reference to Oscar Peterson. I stumbled across his work a few years ago and have really liked it ever since. Especially the Canadiana Suite.

Dusty, if you like Mogwai, especially early Mogwai (which I prefer), you should check out Pelican. It's mellow when you need background sound, and violent when you need a new blood eagle.
