Yes indeed, there are programs to help you manage your sockpuppets and make them look real, creating separate Facebook and Twitter accounts for them, and all sorts of other stuff -- maybe even Amazon wishlists! And a LOT of corporations use them. I noticed a lot of the same people posting what was essentially the same cut-and-paste post, so I asked, half jokingly, how much they were getting paid for each post. Someone answered "ten cents", and that it all went back to Karl Rove's "brilliant" strategy. The guy was actually bragging about this; I suspect his participation ground to a screeching halt, though.<br /><br />This was a shocking concept to me, but as I watched things unfold over the next couple of years I realized there was a LOT of this going on, paid posters spamming message boards, usually with insults and no facts, or with totally false equivalencies. But it explains a lot about how the memes get started and propagated. There may have even been at least one such poster on this blog, Dusty. Karen in Ohionoreply@blogger.com
