Well, If You Really Want to Go There, Senator McCain....

Over at his excellent blog The Heart of the Matter, Barry Eisler asks Why Do the Palins Hate America?

After all, if guilt by association is okay for the McCaniacs, why don't we start exploring some of the associations of John McCain and Sarah Palin? Like the America-hating organization First Dude Todd Palin is a proud card carrying member of and to whose convention Caribou Barbie delivered a speech? How about McCain's ties to an ultra-right wing group the Anti-Defamation league describes as 'extremist and anti-semitic"? How about McCain's ongoing association with convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy, who admitted plotting to kill journalists, plotted to firebomb the Brookings Institution, and liked to tell people on his radio show the most effective way to shoot ATF agents ("Head shots, head shots.... Kill the sons of bitches")?

Wink your way past that, Governor Wilma.

  1. It's wrong Jerry. It's wrong when they do it, and it's wrong if we do it.

  2. Bill: it's not wrong to fight back hard and to let your attackers know you'll fight back hard. It's not wrong to point out the hypocrisy of smears and cheap shots. John Kerry learned that lesson too late and the result was eight years of nothing BUT wrong.

  3. The Rs are going to throw their stones no matter how wrong we think they are to do it. I'm not sure it's wrong to point out that they're throwing those stones from inside a glass house.

  4. It's never wrong to point out hypocrisy, lies or hatefulness of someone who seeks a position of power. It's wrong to NOT fight these people.

Here are some statements made by Sarah and Todd Palin’s good buddy and founder of the Alaska Independence Party, Joe Vogler (as quoted in John McPhee’s 1976 book COMING INTO THE COUNTRY):

ON FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT: “a dirty rotten son of a bitch of a Communist traitor.”

ON CONSERVATION: “I’d kill the last pregnant wolf on earth right in front of the President at high noon.”

ON THE U.S. GOVERNMENT: “We [Alaska] are a developing nation, like any developing nation in the world, and we cannot develop under American laws.”

“I suggest they wear red coats. They make better targets. In the federal government are the biggest liars in the United States, and I hate them with passion…I hope we don’t have to take human life, but if they go on tramping on our property rights, look out, we’re ready to die.”

“The government swine. Hate ‘em, hate ‘em, hate ‘em.”

“I wonder what [federal official] Lamoreaux is going to do when I jab him in the belly with my .357…I’m going to run him over with a Cat and turn mosquitoes loose on him while he dies.”

  5. Mr. Bagley,

I wish more people knew this. I'm going to have to do some research.

  6. This reminds of two very important things.

    1. I need to read Eisler's boards for a movie update.

    2. I need find out if John McPhee has had anything new out since Common Carriers.

  7. I read COMING INTO THE COUNTRY as an undergrad in '93 or '94, and I forgot all about Joe Vogler until I followed Dusty's link to the Barry Eisler post.

If Sarah Palin is going to attack Obama because of Bille Ayres (sp?), then it's only fair to shine some light on the scary people with whom she surrounds herself.

  8. I don't know if it's Bill Ayres or Bill Ayers. I've seen it spelled both ways.

  9. I think it is spelled Unrepentant Terrorist Bomber Scumbag (UTBS). UTBS has never renounced his violent actions in the '60s and '70s. UTBS and his wife were in Madison, WI a year or two ago for a book festival. A local reporter asked UTBS about the fugitive Leo Burt who was a part of a group that bombed a campus building killing a physicist. UTSB did not even bother with lip service about justice for a murderer but instead wished the fugitive well and hoped he remains unfound.
