Dumbass Statement of the Day

From as usual, ABC News: President Obama's harsh words for BP, the largest company in Great Britain and the fourth-largest in the world, have provoked one of the most tense times between America and the U.K. since the American Revolution.

Because we were so chummy with the Brits during the War of 1812.

I mean, really. Is it too much to expect that these idiots will have at least a rudimentary knowledge of American history?

  1. Apparently it is. For god's sake, I'm a New Zealander and immediately went "Er, dudes, War of 1812..."

  2. I seem to recall reading about a bit of unease in the relationship back in the 1860s, as well. Something to do with arming rebels . . .

  3. Interesting that HBO has a movie this month about the special relationship the US and UK has had, especially Blair and Clinton. During the Cold War it hit its height, I guess.

  4. oddly enough, if you ask most Brits what "BP" stands for, they won't know - and would tell you that BP - like most of the oil companies - are probably American.

(and in fact 2/3 of BP's employees and shareholders are in the US)

  5. Wow. I was unaware Britain was upset over Obama's comments to BP. The impression I got was, "Dude, you DO have a plan to stop this if it happens in the North Sea, right? Right?"
