Just When You Think They've Gone As Low As They Can, The Republicans Break Out the Shovels and Start to Dig:

Elizabeth Dole ad falsely suggests opponent Kay Hagan is ‘Godless.’
Facing a close re-election race in North Carolina, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) recently released an ad attacking her opponent Kay Hagan, falsely accusing her of being “Godless.” The end of the ad shows a photo of Hagan while a woman yells, “There is no God!”

The only problem is that Hagan is an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC, has taught Sunday School and accompanied youth mission trips.

Hagen is reportedly threatening legal action.

With all due respect Kay, fuck that. It makes you look weak. Hit back, and  hit back hard. Get your pastor, your fellow elders, anyone who can testify to your faith to tell the truth and call "SHAME" on Liddy Dole for this sleazy ad. Point out what a desperate, shameful, and yes, Un-Christian move this is by Dole, who as far as I know hasn't done a damned thing in her years in Washington except take up space.

Now, I'm a firm believer that no religious test shall be imposed as a condition to holding office. But I'm also a believer in setting the record straight and calling a sleazy liar  a sleazy liar.

And Elizabeth Dole: You. Are. A. Sleazy. Liar.

I'm of two minds about what the final thrust of such a hitback should be. Here are the options I've come up with:

1) If Elizabeth Dole is willing to lie to you about something this easily checked, what ELSE is she lying to you about?

2) Telling this blatant a lie about something so easily checked was a really dumb move. Do you want someone who does really dumb things representing you in Congress?

Alas, I suspect that the answer to question 2 might be "yes", so that question 1 would be the way to go.

Incidentally, I'm going over to using OpenID for my comments when possible. You may see future comments from me under my LJ ID of starcat_jewel.

Those darn Doles. They need to be chased away for good.

You're correct about what Senator Dole has done while in office. Our area was hit by losses in textiles when Pillowtex shut down.
John Edwards and Brad Miller came to Eden to talk with folks about what they could do to help. They came alone, no press trailing along behind.
Elizabeth Dole came sailing in to Kannapolis, Pillowtex's main plants, with an army of photographers, stayed about fifteen minutes, and left, never to be heard from again.

But if you kick the Doles out of government then Bob'll have to go back to being Viagra's pitch man. And that's just creepy.

Sarcasm might also work.

"Kay Hagan admits it. She's godless. Here she is in her godless church serving as a godless elder teaching Sunday School to godless children. So why hide it any longer? Why hide it like Liz Dole hides her beauty secrets, namely killing virgins and drinking their blood? Yeah, why hide the truth."

"I'm Kay Hagan, and I approve this heavy dose of sarcasm."

I know there's no God because otherwise, people like Liddy Dole would be struck dead by lightning.

Kay Hagan is now suing Dole for libel and slander. That should be pretty easy to prove...

Except, Colonel, there's a powerful (and correct) bias on the part of the courts towards free speech in the context of political ads, even awful ones like this. I think the lawsuit is a terrible idea. I do like Hagan's response ad, which says Dole is 'bearing false witness against a fellow Christian."

Being godless is bad? I must have missed the memo.
