American Heartland Values

Iowa's Supreme Court says that the state's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. And note that that's under Iowa's State Constitution, so the U.S. Supreme Court has no jurisdiction to review it. Federalism and all that.

Of course, there's the immediate push-back:

...opponents wasted little time in pushing for a state constitutional amendment that could send the issue to voters.

Hey, I've got a great idea for a Constitutional Amendment:

In matters of sex, romance, and/or domestic living arrangements between consenting adult humans, the Legislature shall mind its own goddamn business.

How's THAT for a classic American value?

I'll see you and raise you one. How about a constitutional amendment guaranteeing gay (or any other kind of) marriage?

You'll have to sell it to your party first, though ... they're still very busy maitaining that pubic hair lead to the left of the other party.

I've already mentioned I don't agree with Obama on the gay marriage issue. And I believe YOUR contention is that Obama says he's not for gay marriage, but you don't believe that's true. Which is simply bizarre.

It's heartening to me that a State from the Heartland developed heart.

Okay, that's corny, but the sentiment behind it is genuine. I was asked today if my lady and I were gonna hustle to Iowa to get married, and we're not but we're thrilled that the possibility has been opened.

People go on about "activist judges", but left to their own devices, The People will legislate some truly idiotic things. I'm pleased that the judicial system is looking out for those of us who are uncommon, still seeing us as fully human, which not everyone does.

This is me, stepping down from my rickety soap box but still smiling and shouting, "Yay!"

I have faith in Obama (as a person).I don't believe for a second that he believes marriage should be restricted to a man and a woman. Call me bizarre (or simply bizarre) but I think he's a politican first and that precludes him from speaking his mind (or the Dems wouldn't have nominated him).

I hope I'm not wrong because that would make Obama even more like George Bush (if he truly believes marriage should be restricted) and I don't think I can handle any more change I can't believe in.

I really do think that if the PR campaign against the proposed anti-gay marriage contitutional amendment took as its central message "Mind Your Own Business," the thing would go down to a huge defeat. There's even a theme song for it (I prefer Taj Mahal's vesrion).
