A Challenge for The Geeks Among Us (You Know Who You Are)

Santorum defends Iraq War with LOTR analogy: "Embattled U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said America has avoided a second terrorist attack for five years because the “Eye of Mordor” has been drawn to Iraq instead.

Santorum used the analogy from one of his favorite books, J.R.R. Tolkien's 1950s fantasy classic “Lord of the Rings,” to put an increasingly unpopular war in Iraq into terms any school kid could easily understand.

“As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else,” Santorum said, describing the tool the evil Lord Sauron used in search of the magical ring that would consolidate his power over Middle-earth."

Okay. you geeks out there! Match current world figures with your favorite LOTR characters!

The problem is there is no one that has the great evil or the great noblity of a good many of the characters.
After all the modern evil characters in the world seem to be put there for comic relief, unless you have to live with them, of course.
I grew up with Khrushchev, aman with a finger on a button that could end the world and in the other hand a shoe that he was banging on the podium to get attention. Not evil but sure as hell scary. Compared to him a man setting in a cave somewhere muttering threats just doesn't seem like much.
There are plenty of lesser characters and here goes

Theoden , King of Rohan, several of the old guard Republican senators come to mind Warner of Virginia comes to mind. may they be like Theoden and regain their nobility before they die.

Denathor , Steward of Gondor = John McCain,

Crima wormtongue= just about any Neocon you might mention,

Saruman(the wizard who was good turned evil) = Dick Cheney
